About the event
The great love story of the East, told in music. Qays loves Layli so completely that people call him Majnun, the one possessed by love; their families forbid them to be together, and he leaves for the desert, where his longing turns into poetry.
This new staging of the classic Uzbek opera follows Alisher Navoi’s poem. Soprano Gulnoza Rasulova sings Layli and tenor Bekzod Hamroyev sings Majnun, with the theatre’s chorus and orchestra under Azamat Yunusov. A moonlit desert on stage and costumes of hand-embroidered silk bring the world of the poem to life.
Sung in Uzbek with Russian and English surtitles. The performance runs about two and a half hours with one intermission.
